An acceptable age gap refers to the socially acceptable age range between two individuals to get into a romantic relationship.
This is given by two thumb rules:
Minimum Acceptable Age Gap - This can be calculated using the half your age plus seven rule. This rule states that by dividing your own age by two and then adding seven, you can find the socially acceptable minimum age of anyone you want to date.
For an example, Suppose your current age is 24 years, then using this rule, you can date anyone who is (24/2) + 7 = 12 + 7 = 19 years old.
Maximum Acceptable Age Gap - This can be calculated using the maximum age boundary rule. This rule states that: Take your age, subtract it by 7 and then double it. This should be be the socially accepted maximum age of your dating partner.
For an example, if your current age is 24 years, then using this method, you can date anyone who is (24-7) x 2 = 17 x 2 = 34 years old.
At last, one should remember that the relationship between any two individuals totally depends on the mutual consent and comfort of both the parties involved.
Note: Different cultures and regions have different socially accpeted age gap years.

Solved Example
Example: James is currently 26 years old. Calculate the minimum and maximum socially acceptable age range of the future dating partner.
John Current Age (in years) = 26 years
Minimum Age - Using the half your age plus seven rule, we can easily calculate the minimum age.
Minimum Age = (26/2) + 7 = 13 + 7 = 20 years old
Minimum Age - Similarly, using the maximum age boundary rule, we can calculate the maximum age.
Maximum Age = (26 - 7) x 2 = 19 x 2 = 38 years
Thus, John can date anyone who lies in the age group of 20 years to 38 years.
